Chanel FW23
10-word show review: An homage to the camellia flower from decor to design.
Designer: Virginie Viard
Location: Grand Palais Éphémère
The vision: For fall/winter 2023, the Grand Palais Éphémère was adorned by a larger-than-life camellia flower, a symbol of the house of Chanel since the 1920s. The bloom took centrestage for the evening and found itself on seats, invites and more importantly, on the designs that Virgnie Viard sent down the runway. Shares Viard: “The camellia is more than a theme, it’s an eternal code of the House. I find it reassuring and familiar, I like its softness and its strength”.
Signature style: Decidedly playful and delicate, a film by prolific duo Inez & Vinoodh set the tone for the designs of the evening. Japanese actress Nana Komatsu, decked out in an inky black Viard creation, was soon emulated by the models of the morning. They walked out in an assortment of blacks and whites: some, like Adwoa Aboah, in shimmering black tweed, and others, in assymetrical coats, slips, short suits and midi dresses adorned with white plumes. What stood out in particular were tufts of white pom poms that found themselves on sweaters.
What to shop from the collection: Viard’s offering proves a covetable one. Whether this comes in the form of the hues, from the pinks to the rich magentas, the romanticism and youthful energy of the collection is not lost. Shares Viard: “The faded colours, the dusky pink, the crafted pieces, the touch of the ‘60s and ‘70s, [it gives] a certain English vibe. The comfortable enveloping coats and the authentic materials make the collections more real, and more charming too.” Own a piece of this in the form of this season’s knee-high leather boots, flouncy skirts and floral maxi dresses.
Miu Miu FW23
10-word show review: Nerdcore at its finest, from granny cardigans to sparkling separates.
Designer: Miuccia Prada
Location: Palais d’lena
The vision: Miuccia Prada has always been one to explore the innate connection between people and the clothes that they choose to wear. Beyond that, the prolific designer’s observation expands into the identities and intimate relationships one forms with themselves through the vehicle of fashion. Shares Prada: “The point with this collection was to look at fashion from a personal point of view. I am always interested in how people look at things, their consideration, why they are attracted to certain ideas and why others repulse them. This collection explores the idea of looking. The concept that, through close study, garments can be transformed both in their design, and again in how they are worn.”
Signature style: For fall/winter 2023 at the Palais d’lena, the designer explored this concept in a few ways. The first thing that was evident was the models’ disheveled and static-stricken hair. Nerdcore was back in full effect: thin cardigans were paired with hip-slung straight-leg trousers, spectacles sat slanted on models’ faces and pencil skirts were paired with minute kitten heels and the brand’s popular bag offerings. At one point, the models blurred into one, boasting a sense of eerie similarity.
What to shop from the collection: While the viral offerings from MiuMiu (read: the ultra-fun denim and crop shirts and top handle mini bags) will probably be on fashion lovers’ wishlists for a good period of time, add some of these new additions to your rotation for flair. For one, we think the cardigans are a cute yet practical way to layer for the tropics. If you’re travelling sometime soon, however, opt for the all-leather, two-tone hoodies for a fit to remember.
