Move over, Brat Green: there’s a new It colour in town. Burgundy has been dominating our fall moodboards—through the autumnal collections of Hermès, Gucci and Ferragamo, most recently, in the new cruise drop from Bottega Veneta—and of course as seen on the street style pack and our favourite stars, including one very loved up couple Zendaya and Tom Holland.
Burgundy, alongside fellow shades in its red family, are commonly associated with the fall season. It lends a softer and more luxurious feel to everything it touches, and the shade often feels like elegance personified. And no, in contrast to the shouty lime green, it’s a colour that’s well considered. Unlike that loud and punchy shade that leaves you seeing red, burgundy is much more mature than that. It’s grown up, filled with depth, and quietly confident—often imparting the same nuances to its wearers.
This season especially, the appetite for deep rouges is omnipresent. It’s an easy shade to invest in because it’s almost (but again, not quite) a plain neutral. Even if you’re an all-black fiend, you can easily add burgundy to your outfit as a point of interest. Think statement boots or a soft luxe bag. The full-bodied shade can even be combined with classics like brown, grey and beige. But there’s also the case of full, head-to-toe burgundy looks as sported by beloved Z, which will surely turn heads.
