Every fashion girl knows that accessories are the best way to elevate a classic LBD. But looking at Bella Hadid’s Schiaparelli necklace at Cannes 2021, the supermodel didn’t just take that advice and run with it. She knocked it straight out of the park.
The LBD in question was a form-fitting Schiaparelli black wool crepe gown fresh off Daniel Roseberry’s Fall 2021 couture collection. The maison adds that there’s also some extra lace detailing on the back. But who are we kidding? Everyone’s got their eyes glued to the front.

Delivering the maison’s signature sense of irreverent grandeur, the dress has an extra-large neckline—arguably the complete absence of a neckline—which is meant to be covered by a massive gold-toned breastplate.
Worn around Hadid’s neck and just about intricate enough to cover up her bust, this show-stopping jewellery piece was inspired by human lungs—a point of focus in numerous ways in this recent pandemic.

Set on an oversized choker chain, its organic lines and irregular form draws the eye to a gold-dipped bronchial tree made up of what must be hundreds of filigreed bronchi, which are the multiple airways that deliver oxygen to the lungs.
Finessed with rhinestones for extra sparkle, this neck piece achieves its three-dimensional effect thanks to a trompe l’oeil illusion, so it appears to change when viewed from a different angle.

Yet Bella Hadid’s Schiaparelli necklace isn’t Roseberry’s only jewellery piece designed based on human anatomy. Far from it. The designer has created jewellery featuring eyes, noses, ears, fingers and toes. Even molars and the nipple for a something more provocative.
Schiaparelli body-inspired jewellery was also worn by Selena Gomez for our July/August issue cover and cover story.
As the first major in-person film festival since Venice 2020, Cannes 2021 is only halfway through. But with Hadid sizzling up the red carpet with such jaw-dropping looks, we can’t wait to see what else she—and other fashion stars—have in store.
