The 2022 Winter Olympics has drawn to a close, leaving in its wake a series of groundbreaking successes and scandals—of which range from a (literal) slip on the part of the Olympics mascot, Big Dwen Dwen, to claims of inhumane conditions at COVID-19 isolation centers. Then there was the doping-related controversy tied to Russian figure skater, Kamila Valieva, which prompted a bevy of discussions and think pieces on the culture surrounding competitive athletics—and if the practices of certain instructors could be constituted as abusive. Amidst such harrowing incidents, however, comes a silver lining: the sportsmen who have been recognised for their hard work, whereupon they snagged numerous medals and accolades for their achievements.
Said winners from the 2022 Winter Olympics includes a significant number of Asians ranging from China to South Korea, with several breaking long-held records. Japanese halfpipe snowboarder, Kaishu Hirano, for one, managed to score the highest amplitude for snowboarders going down a 22-foot snowboard halfpipe. Eileen Gu of China also emerged victorious, earning the title of the first-ever freeskier to score medals in big air, slopestyle and halfpipe.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With the 2022 Winter Olympics comprising a 109 events total (including seven new ones added to the program this year), it was clearly demonstrated that the Asian olympians shone through a variety of sports. Lucky for you, Vogue Singapore has done the legwork and compiled the most distinguished victors into a nifty list for your perusal.
