There is definitely a common thread running through the resort 2021 collections—it’s all about going back to the basics of dressing for yourself. With fashion taking a backseat in this current climate, Demna Gvasalia started thinking about repurposing and restyling his already synonymous house classics for Balenciaga such as the jumbo parkas, the fantastic swingy dresses, the logo hoodies and the tourist souvenir tees against the oddities of a work-from-home scenario. Think: bedroom slippers and flip-flops worn with matching socks. And, lest we forget the cologne bottle fashioned after a clutch. There were no new propositions this time round from the master of irony because he believes that there isn’t a need for one. Fashion is a reflection of our times and, with all that’s already happened in 2020, maybe it’s okay to take a chill pill for now.
