The 2025 edition of the Venice Film Festival has kicked off, and the stars and celebrities have descended upon the charming city. On the red carpets of premieres this year, a shift in jewellery styling seems to have occurred. Last year in Venice, we saw the jewellery trick of wearing diamonds backwards come to the fore. This year, it looks like earrings, that often overlooked and unsung jewel, are now in the spotlight.
It feels right in step with the mood of the moment for styling jewels in a more understated way. What’s trending now, as you’ll see from these celebrity looks, is a sense of restraint. Take one thing off, if you will, to let everything else you’re wearing breathe a little and shine better. See, for instance, Cate Blanchett rewearing an incredible black Armani Privé gown with a plunging neckline embellished with faux obsidian. The temptation might be to dress that neck with a jewel, but Blanchett chose well to go another way. Instead, she paired it with a dazzling pair of Louis Vuitton high jewellery earrings that draws the eye to her face and lightens the look.

We’re also seeing a definite trend of hair worn down, one side pulled back behind the ear. Just the ticket for wearing something fun on the ear. It’s a stylish touch of asymmetry and interest. See: Naomi Watts wearing Agrafe jewels by Cartier inspired by corsetry fastenings, Ayo Edebiri with a cascading arch of diamonds courtesy of Chanel high jewellery, and Pritika Swarup in statement diamond petals by Pasquale Bruni.
But the peek-a-boo moments of earrings with hair worn down might just be the chicest trend. It might sound counterintuitive, but the momentary flash of diamonds and gems can be exhilaratingly stylish. When Julia Roberts and Laura Dern moved and posed on the Venice red carpet, for example, to reveal gorgeous Chopard and Cartier jewellery. And if you’ve got short hair, take a note out of the playbook of Emma Stone, whose pixie cut was styled—just so—to show a sliver of her ear, dressed beautifully with an ear cuff from Louis Vuitton’s high jewellery line.
