Alexa, play ‘Suddenly I See’ by KT Tunstall. The song would instantaneously call upon an entire generation—all who dreamed the big girl dream once, and imagined what it would be like to be a writer or journalist at a fashion magazine. All because they watched one formative film from 2006: The Devil Wears Prada, when Andy met Miranda. So it was understandable that when news first dropped that it would receive the sequel treatment, fashion fiends everywhere went wild.
The film returns 20 years later into a changed media landscape, where print journalism is a sunset industry. It holds a mirror to real life, and two decades after the first film, its starry, starry cast is also rediscovering the world of Runway magazine—and the impact of the original film—once again. And with its upcoming release, it’s certainly been a treat to watch, as returning leads Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway have been travelling around the world to meet with fans for the press tour.
Starting with Mexico through Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai, the pair finally landed in London—where they’ve since met up with the rest of their cast, including returning actors Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, as well as new faces Simone Ashley, Lady Gaga and Lucy Liu. Just as one would expect, it has been all eyes on the fashion of The Devil Wears Prada 2’s press tour. For Streep, her first outing was punctured by a major reference: as she slipped into a scarlet Dolce and Gabbana suit. Later on, she put on what Miranda might have called a ‘lumpy blue sweater’ for The Stephen Colbert Show. It was, in fact, cerulean blue. Notably, the devil in question, did indeed wear Prada on multiple occasions—and most prominently, for her final stop in London.
Meanwhile, Hathaway’s outings were filled with plenty of texture and fervour. From voluminous Louis Vuitton gowns and fringed Schiaparelli, her outfits have been a delight to watch (at one point, she was wearing Valentino for crying out loud!). Meanwhile, fan favourite Emily Blunt has been maximising her time in London, with spectacular ensembles pulled from Balenciaga, and of course Dior, which is serendipitously linked to her role in the sequel.
