City style is in the blood of every New Yorker. You’ll know this from an eagle-eye glean of the past week, when the Big Apple was overturned by their most sartorial-forward city dwellers who enlivened the streets with an ebullient mood that could only belong to the beginning of a new fashion week cycle—that of the fall/winter 2024 season. It kicked off strongly, with Peter Do presenting his sophomore collection for Helmut Lang; one that many considered more refined and demonstrative of his direction at the house. There were many other highlights strewn throughout the rest of the week: think sexy leathers by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, the continued reign of coquettecore at Coach and the spellbinding elegance of Thom Browne’s storybook show, guided by Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Raven’.
Yet, as the fall/winter 2024 season took over the fashion capital and set it ablaze, it was clear that the buzz was also being funnelled elsewhere—to the scene outside the shows. Crowds thronged the locations, with the intention of gaining a glimpse of something else entirely: the guestlist. One that has no doubt been evolving over the seasons, as the industry continues to recognise the value of its celebrity clientele and the sort of recognition that comes with having a myriad of global names sit in their front rows. It’s precisely why a surprise appearance from Beyoncé at Luar would make headlines all on its own. Or why Tommy Hilfiger drew in a global cast of celebrity names to their show at The Oyster Bar in Grand Central Terminal—from Win Metawin and South Korean actor-singer Lee Jun-ho to Kelly Rutherford and Sonam Kapoor.
