In a TikTok-led world where our daily routines of skincare have been reworked to no end, the weird reigns supreme when it comes to new beauty hacks and unorthodox methods of slowing down anxious thoughts popping up in the name of self-care. It then comes as no surprise that we’re met with the curious conundrum of needing a shower routine. Earlier this year, Kylie Jenner clued us into an entire step-by-step process of what she does in the shower: from using her pink loofah to the organic oils she drenches herself in after. This was in line with a new collaborative drop of Kylie Cosmetics together with her older sister, Khloe Kardashian, who also revealed that her own personal routine was similar to that of Jenner’s.
For starters, she likes to start off with shampoo and conditioner—before washing it all out. “I like for my conditioner to be out of my hair, then I can wash it off my body. Because I feel sometimes conditioner lingers on the body,” Jenner muses. After which, she can get in with her loofah and scrub it all away. And if you think about it? There’s definitely logic to that statement considering the occlusive properties of hair formulations; Kardashian herself is quick to add that not washing conditioner away properly can actually be the cause of body acne—according to her dermatologist, at least.
Which begs the question: is there actually an order to showering and cleaning our bodies? Just earlier this week, a TikTok video titled “How To Actually Smell Good (Shower Routine)” by @nmkajumulo garnered up to over five million views, as the body and skincare influencer took to the social media platform to give her ultimate lowdown on exactly how one should be cleaning their bodies and rubbing out the stink in the shower. In her video, Kajumulo seems to discuss it all: pre-shower assessments to determine how badly you need a scrub that day, making sure to get your hands on an exfoliator (e.g loofah or body cloth) and even the overlooked crevices of your body that might potentially need a double scrub.
@nmkajumulo had to be said lmao but i love you guys 🫶🏽 this is just like showering 101 basic routine! I’ve taught you guys all my smell good steps so we just gotta get down to the basics #ahowereoutine #howtonotsmell #howtosmellgood #howtonotsmellbad #showereoutine #shower101 #smellgoodallday #smellgoodallthetime #highschoolhygie ♬ original sound – nia kajumulo
Whilst some of these definitely serve as good reminders for all the girl stuff you may already know, it’s the entire thought process of Kajumulo’s that really gets us thinking. For if we’re asking questions about whether we should store our skincare in the refrigerator, then why shouldn’t we be concerned about the basics of how we’re cleaning our bodies? Routine or not, we’ll probably be more mindful of washing our bodies from top to bottom—for instance: the ‘underboob scrub’ (especially after a workout) and lathering on the moisture after getting out of the shower from now on.
