We have returned to the Wednesday universe once more, for the second season of Tim Burton’s well-loved dark comedy, centred on Jenna Ortega’s titular character of everyone’s favourite goth daughter, Wednesday Addams. Two years of anticipation and it’s only right that the series welcomed a press run like no other—starting from the world premiere in London. For the grand occasion, Ortega defied the black dress code and opted for a skin-like Ashi Studio gown that looked like melted wax on her silhouette. But all things considered, it was her make-up that stole the show, as the young actor debuted a smouldering, ghoulish mien by the hands of French make-up artist Mélanie Inglessis. Undoubtedly, a head-turner, but it was also a look that had the internet divided—mainly unsolicited chatter from the male population.

Bleached brows. Black and purple hues peppered over the lids. Impeccable contour that shaded her cheekbones. In the words of Inglessis, this was “a look for the book”. All the respectable make-up elements to nail a gothic dream, but yet somehow landed between man-repelling and a cause of concern for the actor’s sudden transformation. The discourse on Jenna Ortega’s make-up is indeed, yet another reminder that men don’t quite have the right sensibilities to comment on a woman’s aesthetic choices. Some things instantly come to mind beyond the ever so prevalent bleached brows: micro-bangs, baggy bermudas, black lipstick. Basically components that don’t necessarily scream feminine in the conventional sense.
And on the heels of a high-octane press tour, it seems most not in favour can’t grasp the concept of clever method dressing when they see one. Ortega has never looked better emulating Wednesday.
