This season was one of many firsts for Belgian designer Dries Van Noten. Having to contend with the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, the designer decided not to hold a fashion show in Paris this year, but opted for a photo and video campaign instead. It’s the first time that the designer has had to present his work in such a format, and also the first time that he has shown his women’s and men’s collections together.
But what emerged from the depths of Van Noten’s imagination for the new season was as beautiful and nuanced as always. Painterly strokes brushed languidly across crisp, white sundresses, airy chiffon skirts that looked like they were dip dyed and stark, colourful circles that recalled sun spots were present throughout the collection.
“We wanted to work around beauty [that] evokes energy—not one that makes you dream or linger on things that are past, which makes you nostalgic,” he told Vogue‘s Sarah Mower. “It had to push you to the future, to give energy.”
