The Dune cinematic universe is certainly looking like this generation’s Star Wars. Its expansive worldbuilding through scenography and Codex Seraphinianus-esque approach to the fantastical anthropology within its universe is a marvel-worthy feat. Encapsulated within a 70mm projection, Dune 2 was nothing short of a sci-fi fanatic’s dream on a massive canvas, stimulating the senses through a soul-stirring and evocative spectacle.
One thing that stood out in this epic, above all things, is the character design. Through the medium of garments, individuals and “houses” were well-articulated, with each costume, considerations of climate, culture, mannerisms and values being vast and focused. In an interview with British Vogue, costume designer Jacqueline West says she “drew a lot from the art of Giger,” the horror surrealist who designed the alien in Alien, when working on the costumes of bloodthirsty Harkonnens. Their style code, both gothic and utilitarian, paralleled the works of contemporary designers of today like Rick Owens, Noir Kei Ninomiya and Carol Christian Poell.
Then there’s Lady Jessica as Reverend Mother, with homages the uniform of nuns while following the colour palette of the landscape of Arrakis. She is well-adorned with layers of jewellery, symbolising her status as a leader. Following that are the outfits of Chani, which are battle-ready and charged with utilitarian details. With references to real world applications of combat, neutrals were often seen on Chani to assist her in camouflaging into the sand while on stealth missions as part of the Fedaykin death commando forces. Princess Irulan’s costume comes with heavy medieval inspirations, displaying her fiercely protective facet of her father. A light chainmail veil is often seen on her, reflecting her dual identity as a member of House Corrino, as well as her training as part of the Bene Gesserit with the silhouette of the veil.
With such striking costumes, any fan would be vying for a chance to dress like their favourite Dune character. Below, Vogue Singapore details what to buy to stunt in your Dune-inspired wardrobe.
