The theme for this year’s Met Gala—“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a sartorial homage to Black dandyism—continued to inspire long after the red carpet rolled up. Celebrities including Lorde, Charli XCX, and Blackpink’s Jennie changed out of their sublime gala ensembles and into after-party looks that were comfortable, provocative, and delightfully unfiltered for a night of late-late merriment.
The location? People’s, a glamorous new cocktail lounge in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. The occasion? After Hours, an intimate post-gala gathering hosted by The Bear star Ayo Edebiri, filmmaker Janicza Bravo, playwright Jeremy O. Harris, photographer Tyler Mitchell, and writer-curator Antwaun Sargent. Together, they drew a dazzling cross section of the most stylish names from film, fashion, music, and art for a decidedly laid-back end to fashion’s biggest night.
From midnight to 4 a.m., the vibe was buzzy but unpretentious. Jeremy Allen White lounged on a velvet banquette, deep in conversation with a group that included Suki Waterhouse (who wore an oversized blazer). Robert Pattinson joined soon after, dressed down in a button-down shirt and a jacket tied at the waist, sipping a beer in one hand and holding a mesh baseball cap in the other.
At the bar, Andrew Scott—looking cool in a sleeveless red vest—chatted with Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim. Nearby, under a greenhouse-style skylight, Lorde (in a new Thom Browne look) socialized in a corner booth with Julia Fox. Adjacent to them was Charli XCX, now out of her gothic Ann Demeulemeester gown and into ultrashort shorts and a crisp button-down. Eventually, she, Lorde, and Scott huddled together in a flurry of laughter, even making faces for a group selfie. Later, Charli caught up with Pattinson and Waterhouse moments before the trio slipped out at 2:47 a.m.
At 3 a.m., the party’s energy surged again. Edebiri arrived in oversized black trousers and a miniature hat, embracing Bravo with a long hug. Soon after, Blackpink’s Jennie entered in head-to-toe black and a matching pillbox hat. Then came Tessa Thompson, who immediately hit the dance floor as Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ pulsed through the speakers. Also spotted were Natasha Lyonne, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Joey King.
In a sweet moment, Jennie and Charli reunited in the back room. Charli complimented Jennie’s pillbox hat, prompting Jennie to remove it and crown Charli with it instead. The two giggled together about the exchange.
By 4 a.m., the crowd had thinned. Andrew Scott—last guest standing—stepped outside with friends, waiting in the rain for their cars and debating which after-party to hit next. Clearly, no one wanted the Met Gala’s magic to end.
