New York has kicked off the “Big Four” fashion weeks at full speed, with several highly-anticipated events on the roster, from Ralph Lauren’s comeback to the runway after four years and a first look at Peter Do’s debut at Helmut Lang. The former held its runway in Brooklyn at an artist’s loft made opulent with gleaming chandeliers and draped canvases, as models strutted down in tailored and glamourous looks constructed from denim and painted prints—staying true to the esteemed designer’s Americana. It was only fitting for the brand to present its collection in the Big Apple, where Ralph Lauren was born and raised.
The latter saw Peter Do diving into the archives of the house, first by way of a yellow taxi cab in its campaign collaterals as a reference to Lang’s past decision to advertise on top of taxi cabs. Do collaborated with author Ocean Vuong for his spring/summer 2024 collection; a retelling of the Jenny Holzer installation at the original Helmut Lang store in New York. Words crafted by the author were also featured on several runway looks, printed on reverse button-downs for ease of readability for the audience.
Off the runway, fashion ran amok. Attendees and celebrities alike ruled the streets with an amalgamation of prints, pattern and texture in an array of striking colours, from sunset palettes to lime greens and electric blues. Buttery leathers were key to many outfits across tops, bottoms and accessories. Tailored pieces were also a popular choice, as the reigning trend of oversized blazers made their rounds.
