Red carpet devotees, rejoice—Cannes season is upon us. Following the undeniable high of a show-stopping Met Gala earlier this month comes the buzzy arrival of the 78th Cannes Film Festival. With 22 highly-anticipated films vying for the esteemed Palme d’Or, it’s inevitable that the French Riviera will see a constellation of A-list stars arrive in its city. The prestigious festival is often home to the industry’s most highly-awaited pictures, and also where unexpected gems are discovered. Take, for example, the tremendous success of Sean Baker’s Anora, starring Mikey Madison, which eventually won the Best Picture at the 97th Academy Awards.
Amidst this year’s roster of films that will premiere at Cannes sits Wes Anderson‘s star-studded The Phoenician Scheme. From the trailer alone, many know to expect the likes of Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera and Tom Hanks to make their appearances on the carpet alongside screen favourites Benedict Cumberbatch and Scarlett Johansson. The latter will also make her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which is also featured in this year’s lineup. Whilst Ari Aster’s western black comedy Eddington will welcome Pedro Pascal and Academy Award winners Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix to the French city.
Not to be missed? British actor Josh O’Connor who stars in not one but two films set to première at Cannes: Vietnam War-set The Mastermind, and poignant gay romance The History of Sound which also stars heartthrob Paul Mescal.
With the opening night of the film festival done and dusted, a trove of actors and industry names have already descended upon the red carpet. The festival’s updated dress code guidelines emphasising ‘no skin show’ and streamlined silhouettes (sans voluminous ball gowns) have our favourite celebrities rethinking red carpet fashion. In response, Cannes darling Bella Hadid swooped in wearing a sleek black cowl neck Saint Laurent dress while Halle Berry, who sits on this year’s jury for the festival, was seen in a structured Chanel ensemble.
