Year on year, the Met Gala calls upon luminaries from every corner of the world to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City—to celebrate the opening of its annual fashion exhibition, which takes on a new theme every time. Notably, whilst the inner workings of the actual charity gala are very much shrouded in mystery, it is the scintillating affairs of its lauded red carpet that often draws in the attention of all, especially when one never knows what (or who) to expect. After all, the secretive nature of the guest list prior to the first Monday of May is but one of the few constants associated with the ‘biggest night in fashion’.
For 2023, the scene had been one the fashion crowd waited on with bated breaths, simply for the legacy-leaving theme of its exhibition: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. Dreamt up in memory of the late esteemed designer—who has sat at the helm of his namesake brand, Patou, Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, and of course Chanel—the exhibition is a glamorous homage to his illustrious career and life. Understandably, the dress code for the evening was a behemoth of a task to embrace; as the revered steps of the Museum demanded looks that were unmistakably ‘in honour of Karl’.
And slowly but surely, the stars of the evening made sure to execute their best on the red carpet. Apart from the jaw-dropping appearance by indisputable queen Rihanna, the night saw an impeccable sprinkling of sartorial deliveries from a throng of Asian celebrities. Case in point? Blackpink’s Jennie Kim—otherwise known as the final Chanel muse chosen by Lagerfeld himself—made her highly-anticipated debut on the gala’s red carpet with an archival pull from the house’s fall/winter 1991 runway. Elsewhere, GOT7’s Jackson Wang and Ke Huy Quan took Lagerfeld himself as the blueprint and incorporated elements of his iconic uniform into their looks.
Below, relive the best fashion moments from the Asian celebrities at the Met Gala 2023.
