It was perhaps around a decade ago that K-pop first started garnering international recognition. Bands such as Big Bang, Wonder Girls and 2NE1 were lauded for their infectious beats and charismatic stage presences; a distinctive style that would soon come to characterise the genre to this day. As veteran Hallyu fans can attest, octet configuration Girls’ Generation proved to be one of said trailblazers, too, kicking off a movement where flirty and upbeat tunes ruled the roost. The songs and performances were as contagious as they were charming, of which was largely credited to lead vocalist, Taeyeon.
Recognised for her dulcet tones and impressive range, Taeyeon soon struck out on her own with a solo album in 2017 titled My Voice. This was followed by Purpose in 2019 and, as of late, Invu. Her latest work has placed number one on the iTunes Top Albums charts in 21 regions since its release, drawing buzz thanks to a distinctive new sound and aesthetic. This is clear to see in the promotional materials alone; a slickly-produced affair that belies Taeyeon’s understated and simplified vibe established in her earlier creations.
Invu is a whole new beast in every sense of the word.
