All Texas girls grow up admiring the late music star Selena Quintanilla, also known as the “Queen of Tejano Music”. Case in point: Selena Gomez arriving at the 2024 Emmys. The flattering resemblance proved to us that the modern-day star, despite her love for the Upper East Side, is a true Texan at heart. Fun fact? The famed pop singer, child actress and thriving businesswoman was actually named after the influential Quintanilla (something she previously revealed on an episode of Selena + Chef).
Tonight, Gomez took the Selena likeness to the next level by channelling one of Quintanilla’s most iconic beauty looks from the 1994 Grammys. First there’s the sexy but piece-y ’90s up-do—complete with a tendril bang curled to perfectly highlight Gomez’s glowing face—done by longtime hairstylist Marissa Marino. Then there’s the jewellery: whether in dazzling earrings or a show-stopping necklace, both women knew that sparkles are key to a good night on the red carpet. But most important is the red lip. For Quintanilla, it was a trademark beauty look, while for Gomez, tonight’s vampy dark berry lip is almost certainly from her own brand, Rare Beauty.
Perhaps Gomez is also trying to channel some of Quintanilla’s good luck. On that night in 1994, the elder Selena won best Mexican American album for Live, which finally earned her some recognition from mainstream society beyond her Spanish-language market. Tonight at the 2024 Emmys, Gomez is nominated for her fine work as an executive producer for Only Murders in the Building. Only time will tell if it pays off, but either way she found a winning beauty look.
