The Cannes Film Festival has long occupied a unique place within the celebrity style calendar, functioning as both a celebration of cinema and one of fashion’s most glamorous red carpets. The 79th iteration this year proves no different.
Yet Cannes remains distinct from the increasingly theatrical nature of awards season style—which often tips a certain way in favour of a trend or two. Just last year, the festival issued a statement clarifying its dress regulations: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.” Along with it, was a festival-wide ban on overt volume and long trains; a sombre rejection of the frothy fun, and risqué, naked dressing which the Croisette’s famous steps brings.
There is hope yet—for the stars to still bring the glamour to the Promenade. In 2026, the return of stalwart Cannes names are due: with Sandra Hüller’s Fatherland and Penélope Cruz’s The Black Ball both premiering this year. Drive‘s Nicolas Winding Refn is making a punchy directorial return (his first in a decade) with Her Private Hell, helmed by a cool girl crew of Sophie Thatcher, Havana Rose Liu and Kristine Froseth, alongside Charles Melton and Diego Calva. Meanwhile, the ambitious, sci-fi thriller Hope will see Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander all land on the carpet.
Among the standout appearances already spotted at the opening ceremony were jury member Demi Moore in custom Jacquemus and Park Chan-wook in Saint Laurent, joined by fellow jury members including Stellan Skarsgård, Diego Céspedes, Laura Wandel, Chloé Zhao, Isaach de Bankolé, Ruth Negga and Paul Laverty.
