Considering how she’s gained concrete-grey street cred from all over the world, the New-York based Chinese designer has undoubtedly just upped her cult status (might be something to do with that sold-out Baggu collaboration) and it’s screaming new fashion girl obsession.

So, let’s talk aesthetics. Rather than filing the look under balletcore, coquettecore or any –core at all, we’re looking at some playfully mashed together moodboards here: kooky, dreamy, easy. Comfy, too—especially if you’ve got your eye on those delicious satin Mary Janes. Liang’s crowd also probably never takes themselves too seriously; a quick glean of the @sandyliang Instagram account will tell you this enough. With both her personal life and the brand’s promotional material all being funnelled through the same channel, it’s almost as if she’s telling you she’s synonymous with the girl she’s designing for. Insofar that Ghibli-led collages, her mirror selfies, snaps of the places she lives in and her grandmother (also her first muse!) going grocery shopping all seamlessly fill the page.

Perhaps her aesthetic alludes to some sort of twee revival, only the Sandy Liang girl is both quirky and cool. No doubt then, that she’s managed to win the hearts of more than one It-girl; late last year it was Bella Hadid wearing a two-piece look from the spring/summer 2023 collection, and just last month, K-pop superstar Jennie Kim played dress-up in the brand’s Downtown store in the Big Apple. For Liang hasn’t merely captured an aesthetic, she’s created a mood. One that sumptuously combines the occasional frilly girliness from within, whilst pursuing stylish, unbridled comfort that still sparks joy, even from the simplest moments in life. Like a day you tick off everything on your grocery list perhaps.
