The day has just begun and the time for your daily GRWM routine is here. You’ve set your base, done your brows and have moved on to the windows of the soul–the eyes. The lids are the perfect canvas for colour, creativity and expression while a set of lashes add an extra oomph. However, those with monolids may beg to differ.
Being born without any crease or fold above the eyes may ensue doom for some, especially beauty fiends vying for clean cut eyes or a sensual smoky look for a night out. The swish and flick of sleek eyeliner tend to result in wasted efforts, often going unnoticed or messy. If you’ve hopped onto social media platforms like Tiktok and Douyin for a last-ditch effort in hopes for a solution, the rabbit hole of elaborate and intricate tutorials are likely intimidating and hard to follow.
Fret not, for Vogue Singapore understands the struggles surrounding nailing make-up with monolids. Here, make-up artist Airin Lee unfolds the key methods when it comes to make-up techniques for monolid eyes and the various looks to help amplify and accentuate the eyes, below.
What is the trick to acing eyeliner for monolids?
The key is to line the eyes at the end instead of the entire eye, since its visibility disappears once the lids are hidden. “But, if you line the ends and form a wing, that will create the lift on the eyes,” quips Lee.

Common and popular eyeshadow looks like cut-crease, smoky eye, etc. tend to look awkward or make the eyes look smaller on monolids. How would you go about eyeshadow application for monolids to prevent this?
As the composition of monolids tend to be puffier, looks like cut-creases and smoky eyes that contour the features will not look as appealing or defined on monolid eyes. Lee advises to opt for matte eyeshadows, steering clear of shades that have red or peachy undertones to combat the natural puffiness. When it comes to blending the shades out across the lid, Lee suggests applying a gradient of just one tone for monolids, as “that creates a soft contour on the lids without looking too harsh,” she explains.
What colour palettes are more suitable for monolids?
Lee prefers earthy and cool-toned browns to accentuate the depth of the eyes.

What are the best ways to do eyelashes for monolids?
Lashes might just be the most crucial step in a beauty routine for monolid eyes, and “are the main cast to make the look,” Lee states. For natural lashes, the key is to use the J-curl technique when curling your lashes. When it comes to false lashes, Lee recommends applying the longest length at the centre of your eyes rather than the end, as this opens up the eyes.
