When talking about Southeast Asian fashion, brocades, intricate patterns and symbolic textiles are often the first things that come to mind, synonymous with the region’s rich cultural heritage. Today, however, the region’s fashion scene extends far beyond those familiar hallmarks, embracing a more audacious approach to design. From our neighbours in Malaysia to Vietnam and beyond, a new generation of Southeast Asian designers are making their mark on the global fashion landscape. Blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design and urban streetwear sensibilities, the region offers an exciting breadth of creativity that’s impossible to overlook.
Vietnamese brands have been at the forefront of reshaping the narrative around Southeast Asian fashion. Labels like Feng System create garments reminiscent of video game characters, while LaLune champions unapologetically over-the-top silhouettes. While many of these designers lean into statement-making pieces, others strike a balance between bold design and cultural heritage. One such label is Thailand’s Tankair, which specialises in intricately knitted pieces woven with traditional Thai textile motifs, reinterpreted through a modern lens. A similar dialogue between heritage and modernity can be found closer to home in the work of Singapore-born designer Shawna Wu. In her latest collection, she reimagines the traditional cong bangle, drawing inspiration from ancient Chinese jade cong vessels and transforming the motif into intricately detailed statement bangles.
These labels are just a handful of the many designers shaping Southeast Asia’s fashion landscape. Countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Bali, among many others, each bring their own perspective to the region’s thriving fashion scene. Rooted in their own cultures and shaped by lived experiences, these designers are cultivating distinct identities while collectively redefining what Southeast Asian fashion looks like today.
