If you often find yourself fantasising about a whimsical place, you are not alone. Take it from Christian Dior himself. Although he made a name for himself in Paris, Dior often dreamt of escaping to his country home in the South of France, the Château de la Colle Noire. That sense of a joyful getaway is strongly felt in the Rose des Vents collection of fine jewellery, which this month introduced a new range of colourful novelties.
At the Château de la Colle Noire, Dior lovingly decorated and tended to this haven away from the city. He planted rose bushes, lilies, violets and jasmines—his love of flowers is deeply ingrained in his work too, and he’s described his haute couture dresses as turning their wearers into flower women. He looked after the vines and olive trees at this Provençal home, and gave himself to the space.
The entry way to the chateau features a pebbled mosaic floor in the design of an eight-pointed compass rose. This is one of Dior’s cherished superstitious motifs, which Victoire de Castellane, the artistic director of Dior Joaillerie, seized upon in 2015 to create the house’s signature Rose des Vents collection of good luck charm jewels. The key motif remains the compass rose from which the collection takes its name, but over the years de Castellane has enriched the line with more symbols and gris-gris charms to give the collection more expression.
This year, the line pays tribute to Monsieur Dior’s magical dreaming with star, sun and moon motifs interpreted and crafted in colour for the first time. Victoire de Castellane has dreamt up a new palette for the Rose des Vents collection of decorative stones like turquoise, carnelian, tiger’s eye, pink opal, and doublets of mother-of-pearl and agate. These vibrant strings of celestial talismans are plenty charming, and sure to set the mind on course for a getaway.
