What does it take for a design to become an icon? An unmistakable, recognisable quality to the look. Quality of craftsmanship so it lasts. And time, that non-negotiable ingredient that tests and separates what sticks around. Now freshly in its second decade, the Coco Crush collection of fine jewellery first introduced by Chanel in 2015 is shaping up to be a true modern icon.
The idea of the collection is simple: take the quilted pattern of 2.55 handbag fame and transpose its graphic geometry onto precious gold jewellery. Ease and simplicity, so critical to the allure of Chanel design, are embodied by Coco Crush. The easily transposed quilted motif has proven itself a language, or ‘grammar’ as the maison describes it, of style in its own right across a collection of rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces that’s as varied as it is essential.

Chanel is introducing a fresh element of suppleness to Coco Crush in the form of choker and short necklace styles, and a pair of transformable earrings. In fine jewellery, suppleness is expressed through mesh craftsmanship, turning rigid bands of quilted gold into movable, flexible ribbons that can be laid flat. The precision and savoir-faire of these jewels is subtle: even as they hug the neck, the grooved ‘X’ incisions that form the quilt motif remain sharp and graphic. Maintaining chic and style while in movement is, after all, fundamental to the maison’s design ethos: one of Gabrielle Chanel’s earliest coups was to make restrictive corsets démodé and elevate jersey.

Perhaps the most outstanding and outsized new design, though, is one that references how Gabrielle Chanel dressed herself. The couturier was known for wearing matching pairs of statement cuff bangles, a punctuative and decorative way to accentuate the wrists. Now, there is a precious Coco Crush version in the brand’s signature shade of beige gold—fabulous on its own, indomitably chic as a pair.
