Over the last decade, Coachella has cemented itself in the cultural zeitgeist far beyond its beginnings as a music festival. Held over two weekends in the windy Southern California desert, the yearly affair has earned its stripes as one of the biggest stages in the world not just for the music, but for musicians and festivalgoers alike to stunt in eye-catching ensembles, with intricate hair and make-up looks to boot.
While Coachella beauty has long evolved past the unspoken dress code of boho hairstyles and sparkling bindis of the 2010s, the desert festival remains ground zero for spotting what’s trending in beauty, whether new or re-emerging, classic or experimental. Leading the charge this year—to nobody’s surprise—was night one headliner Lady Gaga, who stunned with no less than eight wardrobe changes complete with several wig transformations in her self-referential five-act set. Also pulling their weight were Japanese girl group and Coachella debutantes XG, who brought their otherworldly, boundary-breaking beauty and style to night three of the festival.
Even under the sweltering California sun, South African musician Tyla chose to turn the heat up even more, pairing her slinky Y2K outfit and signature glowing complexion with a smouldering cat eye look, at the same time debuting a surprising new facial piercing. Elsewhere in the Colorado desert, stars like Blackpink’s Lisa and American singer-songwriter Muni Long stuck to the tried and true formula of glitter and rhinestones for their Coachella beats, as did content creators in attendance like Steph Hui.
