When you’re a jewellery maison as storied, revered and institutional as Cartier, a little rebellion is in order now and again. To shake things up, as it were, and keep your collections fresh. The latest disruption comes in the form of colour, which adorns a series of new designs in the Clash de Cartier collection.
Colour, incidentally, is no small thing for Cartier. Look into its past and you’ll see a host of design signatures anchored by colour. The unusual accord of blue and green dubbed the peacock motif, or the juicy shades of red, green and blue on its Tutti Frutti jewels, for example. It’s significant because coloured gems, which have been on the up and increasingly a trend in jewellery, have not played such a big role in Cartier’s classic jewellery collections like the Love, Juste un Clou, Trinity and Panthère.
Clash de Cartier, introduced in 2019 and the youngest line for the brand, is perfectly fitting for this new injection of chromaticism. This spring, the jewellery house is rolling out a line of must-have styles set with colourful beads of onyx, red or green agate, and pink chalcedony. The new range consists of earrings, pendants and rings in rose gold with these decorative stones.
Look a little closer and you’ll notice that each bead is pierced and pinned into the design with a clou de Paris nail—simultaneously enriching and maintaining the graphic signature of the collection. The coloured gems add new layers of complexity that speak to the virtuosity of Cartier craftsmanship. Each bead is carefully matched and aligned to the millimetre for a uniform look, yet because these are natural stones, each has the slightest difference in hue and character. And because of the delicate touch needed to shape, set, secure, adjust and finish these beaded pieces, they are composed on average of twice the number of parts as a Clash de Cartier design crafted only from gold.
