Within the fashion industry, several annual events are marked on the calendar. There are the seasonal fashion weeks, award ceremonies such as the Oscars and Grammys and of course the crème de la crème of all events: the Met Gala. For one night, all of Hollywood’s most acclaimed stars—from actors and musicians to athletes and models—follow a theme and make an appearance at the historied Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, dolled up in glistering ensembles.
This year, the theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”—which pays tribute to the German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and his prolific career. Lagerfeld begin his tenure in fashion in the 1950s, and quickly rose to stardom within the industry. His impressive portfolio includes working at powerhouses such as Balmain, Patou, and Chloé, before becoming the creative director of Chanel in 1983 and cementing his legacy. The costume exhibition this year within the Metropolitan Museum of Art will befittingly trace Lagerfeld’s accomplishments in fashion, film, photography, and art.
On the red carpet, celebrity guests streamed in in their strongest attires. There were explicit Lagerfeld references from various attendees, with Usher and Ke Huy Quan sporting sharp suits, black gloves and sunglasses reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s signature look. Other recognisable faces including Alton Mason and Brian Tyree Henry paid homage to some of Lagerfeld’s greatest works, with Mason donning a sheer dress inspired by the Chanel bride and Tyree Henry wearing archive pieces from the late designer’s namesake label. Rapper and style savant A$AP Rocky showed up in a full Gucci ensemble, referencing an iconic look that was seen on Lagerfeld in 2004. American actor Jared Leto took it one step further, arriving at the event dressed in costume as Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved pet cat.
With all of the men showing out, it seems like the Met Gala continues to live along the lines of “more is more”. Below, Vogue Singapore rounds up the best menswear looks from the unforgettable night.
